It’s a scavenger hunt.
You know how scavenger hunts work, right?
If not, there’s a list of objectives. Things like, “Find the statue” or “Find the biggest donut.”
You go out and complete those objectives. Typically, you take pictures to prove you completed them.
The winner is the person who completes the most objectives before the deadline.
Makes sense, right?
#nlgs18 is a scavenger hunt.
There’s a list of 60+ objectives. Things like:
- Clean & Organize Your Garage
- Organize a Wrenchfest
- Go Autocrossing
You’re probably already planning on doing a bunch of them. And you’ll probably end up doing a bunch more before Fall gets here, too. Things like:
- Build an Engine
- Take a Road Trip
- Participate on a Forum
And you might take pictures when you do these things, right? Maybe share those pictures with friends on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter?
OMGHI2U—that’s EXACTLY what we’re doing with #nlgs18!
We’ve assigned points and hashtags to every objective/activity so we can track who does what all summer long and turn our summer, gearhead shenanigans into a game.
Here’s a teaser picture of the list:
It’s that simple.
Sign up to play #nlgs18, do all the stuff you were already gonna do, share pictures like you were already gonna do, add one of our hashtags to those pictures, score points, and score some points.
The idea is to get us out there and maximizing our summer. Together.
Most of us have been told, over most of our lives, that this car thing we do is just a hobby. That it will never be anything more than a way to kill time and spend money after work.
This is more than a hobby. It’s a way of life. And #nlgs18 is how I’m trying to bring a core group of gearheads like us together to have the best damn summer we can. Together.
When fall gets here in 12 short weeks and someone asks, “What did you do this summer?” Do you want to say something like…
“Oh, we went to Disneyland, grandma came to visit, and we hung out by the pool.”
Or would you rather say something like…
“Well, I cleaned out the garage, got a bunch of stuff fixed on the car, and got into racing. It was really cool. I ended up helping one of the racers I met make a whatchamacallit for his race car, and next thing you know, everyone at this BBQ I organized is telling me they want one too, so now I’ve got this side business selling whatchamacallits to racers. How was Disneyland?”
That’s my dream for this thing. That’s MY objective.
Sure, I’m trying to get GBXM up to 1,000 email subscribers before the end of the year—which is why I’m asking everyone who wants to play to please subscribe to one email from me per week—but if GBXM isn’t making a difference in gearheads’ lives, why bother?
I guess I’ll always be writing something—it’s what I do, after all—but this is my mission.
The goal is helping gearheads like you—like US—discover and reach the next level.
And I’m going to do everything I possibly can this summer to help #nlgs18 players do exactly that.
So, does it make sense now?
Sorry I did such a shit job of explaining it up ‘til now.

If not, no worries. The show will go on.
Keep going fast with class and press on regardless.
