Next Level Gearhead Summer 2018 (#nlgs18) starts in TWO DAYS. It’s the most audacious thing we’ve ever done—including publishing monthly print issues. And it’s shaping up to be the most meaningful thing we’ve ever done, too.
I assure you, the lack of information about this thing hasn’t been intentional. In fact, I’ll tell you straight up—this was never supposed to be anything more than a series of emails until April of this year—and I’ve been tinkering with the idea since 2014.
Now it’s a 3-month long global scavenger hunt with over 50 objectives, all designed to easily line up with your existing summer plans (ideally supplementing them) and help you put a little more intention into your automotive plans so you can discover your next level.
Why are we doing this?
It’s simple. We’ve evolved. We’ve evolved from focusing on what people drive and how they drive to why they drive and how driving has made their lives better. Business exists to make a profit, but our business exists to make a difference. Profits will follow when we actually earn them.
No need to talk about money now, though, because #nlgs18 is 100% free and all about you.
We’re making a difference in gearheads’ lives.
We’re on a mission to show you how work and life don’t necessarily have to be separate things. I’ve personally seen how you can turn playing with cars into a rewarding, professional career or business. And I’ve spoken with dozens of gearheads like us who have done likewise.
Years ago, after we published some more career-minded stuff, someone asked me if we were a car magazine or a 12-step program. That’s stuck with me. We are not a fluffy, self-help charity—but we take helping gearheads live better lives deadly serious.
Time is the most precious thing we have. Every sensational political rant on Facebook, every interesting article on Reddit, every clever new series on Netflix—and every hour you spend at work—is time spent making someone else’s dreams come true.
What about YOUR dreams?
If you live for weekends and vacation, your shit is broken. If you think the only car-related jobs out there are sales and service, you’re just as ignorant as the friends and family who suggest you go work at the local dealership. (Not stupid. Honestly uninformed, but I’m trying to make a point.)
There’s a whole world of virtually untapped opportunity out here just waiting for those willing to put a little intention behind their gearhead pursuits. The trick is knowing how to talk about it—and how to back it up with proof.
That’s what #nlgs18 is all about.
Years ago, we were all active on forums, helping each other figure shit out, solve problems, and go fast with class. Today, Facebook and politics put us at almost constant odds, all the while hoovering up our data and attention in a race to the profitable bottom.
Aren’t you tired of all that? I am. I want to spend my days serving our gearhead brothers and sisters around the world. I want a team of next level gearheads by my side, suiting up every day to help those who know how to modify their machines figure out how to modify their lives, too.
That’s why I’m so excited about #nlgs18.
Next Level Gearhead Summer was originally supposed to be a simple series of emails offering suggestions. Now it’s truly next level—and we’re going to have a lot of fun playing cars together.
- If you’re planning on cleaning up your tools, shop, or vehicle…
- If you’re going to a BBQ, a race, or another country…
- If you’re looking to learn something new…
- If you’re down to meet new people…
- If you’re just looking for stuff to do…
…you should sign up for #nlgs18.
It’s free. All I ask is that you subscribe to ONE simple email from us on Friday mornings telling you what stories we published that week. That’s it. And not only can you unsubscribe at any time, you can reply to any email we send and tell me—personally—what you think.
99% of businesses out there see you as little more than a lead and a wallet. I’m sure, somewhere deep down inside, most still really believe in their values and missions, but they’ve got bills to pay. They have to keep those gravy trains rolling.
We’ve got bills to pay, too, but we’ve still got our day jobs. We’re here to make a difference. We’ll figure out how to make a profit later. Right now, we’re all about free, fun, and fearless.
I’ve been getting up at 5AM everyday for nearly a month, trying to make this thing the best it can be before my wife and daughter wake up. Because I want GBXM to make a difference in people’s lives.
Because that’s what this goofy little magazine-themed blog is all about.
Let’s do this!
Let’s play cars with purpose this summer. Let’s come together like we used to—on a forum. Let’s help each other figure shit out, solve problems, and go fast with class.
Let’s get to the next level together, as gearheads united. Around the corner. Around the world.
If you haven’t already signed up to play along, do it now.
And consider doing a kindness for some gearheads trying their damnedest to do put making a difference ahead of making a profit—share this far and wide.
