For a word about Next Level Gearhead Summer, aka: #nlgs18
What the hell is #nlgs18 & why all the hype?
The short answer: I want you to have more fun this summer.
But I also want you to get more than simple entertainment from your fun. So I’ve created an online, scavenger hunt-style game where you score points by sharing your summer updates with us all summer long.
The long answer: I want to help gearheads like us live better lives.
I want GBXM to be about more than just simple, automotive entertainment. I want the stories we tell to inspire. I want the information we share to empower. I want GBXM to make a difference—and I’m tired of having to go through Facebook to reach people.
So I built Next Level Gearhead Summer #nlgs to try and give people a reason to subscribe so we can send them an email Friday mornings with links to the stories we run during the week. If we’re going to help gearheads live better lives, we need to be more intentional about what we do.

As much as I know about marketing from something like a decade studying and practicing it, I’m also a regular, working class stiff who hates commercials and ads just as much as you do. Things worth paying for sell themselves, right? But that’s the thing—we’re not selling anything.
We will later this year, but here’s what you can expect from GBXM on that front.
“Hey! If you’re doing this, we’ve built something we think might help and why. If not, no worries, mate. We now return you to our regularly scheduled gearhead programming.”
And then we’ll get right back to business as usual. It’s just that we’re also getting into the business of helping gearheads do more than just “play with cars” now, too. That’s all.
If you just want to read about cool cars and see how other gearheads live around the world, I promise you, that’s what you’ll find in Gearbox Magazine. We’re moving away from what people drive and how they drive it to why they drive and how driving has changed their lives, but we’re not about to become silver-tongued shills peddling me-too, commoditized bullshit.
Here’s the most comprehensive explanation of #nlgs18 to date.
It’s like a digital scavenger hunt—only, instead of finding things, we’re finding new ideas by trying new things and meeting new people this summer. Share pictures of the automotive things you’re doing this summer, earn points, maybe win a prize.
What sort of things are we doing this summer? I think this list should make it a bit more clear.
- We’re cleaning & organizing our tools, workspaces, & vehicles.
- We’re organizing bbqs, car shows, cruises, movie nights & more.
- We’re learning new skills like engine building, tuning, welding & so on.
- We’re going on racing, off-roading, & overlanding, road trip adventures.
- We’re polishing our next level personal & professional skills & helping others.
You’re probably already doing a lot of this stuff. Which means you’re probably already going to be sharing pictures online. #nlgs is just asking you to share those stories with us to help us keep each other inspired and motivated to play cars with purpose this summer.
Here’s a look at one of the activity modules in this thing—Clean & Organize Your Tools:
I’ve really done a shit job of both explaining and marketing this thing.
I wanted to have this thing completely built, polished and ready to go a month ago, so we could have spent the last month talking about all the activities, why they were selected, and how they work, but I globbed up and blew it.
Now it’s live, and there’s only about a dozen of us playing so far. And you know what, if only a dozen or two people end up playing this year, I’m cool with that. It just makes it easier for us to go above and beyond to help each other have the best summer in a long time.
But I don’t care. GBXM exists to make a difference.
- If you want something more from your automotive adventures…
- If you’re tired of the same old, same old, business as usual…
- If you’re itching to find what’s next…
- If you’re looking for the next level…
- If you just want a nifty trophy…
I’m your huckleberry. And I’m betting that #nlgs18 will make a difference.
Join us and play along this summer. Or don’t.
We now return to your regularly scheduled programming.
