How agile are you? No, I’m not talking about your ability to stand on one foot, pat yourself on the head with one hand, and rub your belly with your other. I’m talking about intellectual acuity – your ability to think critically on the fly and convert new information into actionable knowledge.
By the way, how’s your project coming along?
I’ve always wanted GBXM to be a place where gearheads come together from around the world to discover common ground – and then build on it together. Problem is, GBXM is a magazine. Magazines aren’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think “community.”
What magazines are good for, however, is sharing stories about how gearheads like us are building high performance machines & lives. They’re good for delivering information we can use to do likewise.
So I’m sitting on a curb outside a Firestone Complete Auto Care shop, smoking a cigarette, sipping on a Rockstar Organic energy drink – you know, breakfast of chumpions – while Fezzik gets an alignment before I load up and hit the road for the High Desert Trails Rally (HDT – full report coming ASAP).
I wasn’t about to destroy my newer BFGs on a 1,000 mile weekend road trip because the previous owner couldn’t be bothered to drop $60 on an alignment, so I’ve got a copy of Inc. Magazine on my knee, and I’m flipping through the pages, when I come upon a picture of one of them bright orange McLarens.
Turns out Daniel Ha, who founded Disqus – the comment platform I’ve been using since before GBXM was even an idea – is a gearhead. He built a successful company in his dorm room, and now, when he needs a break, he rents a hypercar and seat time. No shit.image: Wikipedia (click the picture to read the Inc. article)
A couple weeks after HDT, I’m sitting at the kitchen table long after everyone else has gone to bed, catching up on email. One of those emails is a Disqus notification for a comment someone left me somewhere. I’m reminded of the Inc. piece.
Remember when I asked you how your project was going? You know the one I’m talking about. The one you’re thinking about right now. Yes. That one. I want a community where we can help each other get things done.
Remember how I said I’ve always wanted GBXM to be a place where gearheads like us find common ground and build on it together? High performance machines & lives? I want a community where we can help each other live better lives through busted knuckles.
Communities do these things. Not magazines. I sent an email to Disqus’ marketing asking if I could do a quick Q&A with Daniel Ha. I want to talk to him about how his experiences building and modifying a business are – and are not – like building and modifying a vehicle. This is what magazines do after all, deliver information we can use to do likewise.
I was surprised when Disqus’ VP of Marketing, Steve Roy, responded, asking about GBXM – and offering to create a special Gearhead community discussion channel for us wherein I ultimately do my Q&A at some point in the near future. Seriously? Shocked might be a better word, here.
You see, I’d been planning to start a channel on Slack for gearheads like us to help each other with our projects, automotive and otherwise, for about a week prior to this. (Plenty of time to think things through on I-10 between Coachella, California, and Phoenix, Arizona, on the drive home from HDT.) Synchronicity, anyone?Click the image to visit the new channel.

This isn’t exclusively a GBXM community either, by the way. The other moderator so far is the Print Editor of Ultimate MotorCycling Magazine and looks to be just as passionate about life with and on two wheels as we are about four over here, so I’m expecting to see some great conversations.
This is already proving fun.
