Every automotive project begins somewhere. They may not all end (at least, not as we’d hoped), but they all have a beginning. As much as you love/hate your current project, have you ever documented the history from the beginning? You might be surprised to see just how epic your automotive story really is. Where’s your build thread?
WHAT’S A BUILD THREAD?
Build threads, for those unfamiliar, are threaded conversations on discussion forums following individual projects from start to finish. They are a testament to the passion and resolve of gearheads to see things through to completion.
THE FOUR TYPES OF BUILD THREADS
- START TO FINISH – WHOLE VEHICLE
From the night the broken down husk of a once proud machine rolls into the shop on a flatbed and disassembly begins to victory laps at its first event once everything has been fixed or replaced, the whole vehicle build thread is perhaps the most epic. Think: complete restoration.
- START TO FINISH – SPECIAL PROJECT
Maybe the vehicle is fine with the exception of the engine or something. These build threads begin with an introduction to the sub-assembly or conversion to be done, and then the project is followed through to completion. Think: engine swap.
- START TO SOLD
In some cases, the builder runs into financial trouble or plain loses interest (lack of SMART goals will do this) and the unfinished project goes up for sale. Threads like this are hard on builder and follower alike. If the cheering crowd can inspire progress, letting them down by giving up – even if there’s no choice but to cancel the project – only adds to the misery.
- START TO ???
Some people just disappear, never to be heard from again. Regular updates stop, nobody hears anything, people lose interest, and the build thread becomes something of an automotive mystery served up to randoms on Google.
DO YOU HAVE A BUILD THREAD?
We’ve got a special section on our Gearheads-United forum called “The Builders” just for build threads. It doesn’t matter if your project isn’t going to be the next feature on Build Threads (hat tip to Anth for giving build threads their due). We believe every machine has a story.
If your project has been an endless nightmare of failure and disappointment – but you refuse to give up – we’d like to offer you a place to share your story. We recently reloaded our Gearheads-United forum after a bunch of spammers revealed the weaknesses of our previous platform, but if you’re hungry for a platform/pursuit-agnostic community where new ideas pop up where you least expect them, we’d love to host your build thread. Join us.
