Numerous, numerous times on my way to or from work in Scottsdale, this super clean Volvo S70 T5 has passed me and caught my eye. I always try to catch him with the camera for GU+, but only recently got stuck behind him at a light and caught him.
Oft dismissed for their pedestrian styling or front wheel drive, Volvos are at once luxurious and sporty. Your ass has never known a more comfortable seat, people do things with these cars that make muscle car owners’ heads spin, and they depreciate so quickly, there’s a good chance you can get one dirt cheap. We here at GBXM|united (currently, just me, unless you want to help out), have a soft spot for the turbo bricks.
GEARHEAD CAR SALES
Car salesmen get a bad rap. Okay. Maybe they don’t. But that’s what Chris does for a living. Now, you’re going to buy a car from a dealership – wouldn’t you prefer to deal with a fellow gearhead? I know I would. Chris was saving up to buy a 350Z they had on the lot, but since they could never get it to pass emissions, he ended up snagging this 1998 S70 T5 from a buddy back east. As you see it here, it’s his daily driver, but he told me, “Its going to be, admittedly, not the most practical of cars in the very near future; it’s not going to stop me from driving what I love.” He’s always had a thing for driving something unique, going back to when he’d catch people enviously checking out his Datsun 280ZX.
WHAT WE TALK ABOUT
- the ups and downs of modifying such an obscure platform
- how he’s slowly getting over his problem with speed bumps
- how his future plans stand to make this brick a bit less pedestrian
- his view on the whole stance/hellaflush scene (perhaps the best explanation I’ve seen yet)
HAVE YOU SUBSCRIBED YET?
This a quick story about the conversation I had with Chris. The full story will be in the March issue of Gearbox Magazine, which I’ll be publishing the first week of April. Are you subscribed yet? It’s free if you subscribe before the end of March. I might extend that offer another month, but do you really want to wait? This is a great time to get on board at the ground floor as a founding member of the GBXM|united community. Tell you friends, get them in on it too! Together, we can make sure the world gets the stories that really matter.
