After a nearly two year hiatus, I’m pleased to announce the return of Gearbox Magazine! We’re officially re-launching in January, but expect to resume publishing in December.
THE RETURN OF GEARBOX MAGAZINE:
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
CEREAL SERIAL GEARBOX MAGAZINE
We’ve always valued the stories of gearheads like us; people with skin in the game; people who actually own the vehicles they’re talking about. Sure, we like new model reviews as much as the next gearhead, but while the machines bring us together, we’ve seen time and again it’s the people behind them that keep us coming back.
We want the world to see the diversity and tenacity of gearheads like us, so we’re building a short list of next level gearheads who are either starting new projects or starting over in the next two to three months. The plan is to get gearhead and project introductions published in December, then start rolling monthly updates for each project in January.
As I type this up, we’re still looking for as many as eight more projects to feature. We’ve currently got the following confirmed:
- RALLY | Subaru Forester
- RESTO | Datsun Z
- DRAG | 2GNT DSM
- DIESEL | TDI replacement
Want to get your next project featured? Take a look at this page.
We’ll also be featuring gearhead businesses, and have a couple pending right now—a recently launched off road fabrication shop and the other is a well-established rally/race car builder and motorsport service provider. Which brings me to the next thing you should know about the return of GBXM.
WE’RE GOING AFTER
ADVERTISERS SPONSORS THIS TIME
We’ve got crazy big ideas. They all take money. And we don’t have any. Since 2009, GBXM has pretty much been a labor of love. It’s almost all come out of pocket. I think we only made a buck or two per printed issue back in 2014, and at a $20+ print-on-demand price point, pretty much only the people in the issues (and their moms) actually bought copies.
Now that we’ve figured out how to do
advertising sponsorship right with this thing, we’re going to be more receptive to those willing to invest in Gearbox. And we’re going to share that money 50/50 with the gearheads sharing their projects with us. We’re finalizing our wind-up and pitch, but this is happening.
THE NEW & IMPROVED GEARBOX MAGAZINE
As much as we’d like to get back to actual issues, we need to get the new engine broken in. We need to get this thing out on the highway first, so we’ll be digital-only for at least the next year. Depending on picture quality, we’d like to consider turning each series into its own book at the end of the year. That’s a tall order, though, so we’ll have to see how the year progresses.
97% of the stuff we publish will be completely free. The 3% or so that we’ll have for sale will be in the form of special programs and resources, and we aren’t touching any of that until sometime next year. In the meantime, if you don’t want to miss anything, make sure you’ve got a free email subscription—you can get one here.
WE’VE GOT SOME WORK TO DO
We’ve got a lot of work to do to get this thing ready for re-launch. Multiple pages need re-worked. Plus new style guides, email templates and lists, and all the ecommerce stuff we never got around to implementing in 2015. We’ve got a store to build, that we need to get stickers, patches, and shirts for, and a payment gateway so people can easily pay with debit and credit cards.
Fortunately (?) Brian’s unemployed at the moment, so he’s got some time. (If you or anyone you know is looking for a content marketer, freelance or otherwise, please get in touch!)
As always, keep going fast with class, and press on regardless. We’ll be right back.
