Richard has been drag racing since 1998. In 2005, he took 2nd place at Ten of the Best IV, after that, he became more competitive. In 2010, he took his FTO into the mid 10’s. He now sits as the 6th fastest FWD in the UK. His goal? Keep going faster in the ¼ mile.

Drag racing – How did you get started in it?
The same way as most people really, we started doing RWYB (run what you brung) back in 1998 and got hooked. It wasn’t until after I finished 2nd in the FWD class at Ten Of The Best IV in 2005 that I started taking it seriously.
What made you chose a Mitsubishi FTO to race?
I bought my first FTO back in 1997. My second in 1999 when I sold the 2nd I started looking for “something quicker”. I couldn’t find anything that looked as good as the FTO so I decided to see what could be done to an FTO. After a lot of research I decided to drop a VR4 engine into it. It took a few years to complete but we finally had it up and running with a respectable 330bhp which gave it low 13’s passes, since that day its been a mission to go quicker and get more power. At the end of 2010 we had 620bhp (flywheel) and 550lb/ft torque and managed to run a very respectable 10.554@136 mph. Making us the 6th fastest FWD in the UK.
What thoughts run through your head when you’re pulling up to the Christmas tree?
In head 2 head racing, there’s only one thought, getting a better launch than your opponent, anticipating the lights without red lighting.
Got a favorite experience to share from a trip to the drag strip?
This is a toss up between 2 different things, either the final of Ten Of The Best IV where I narrowly lost out to Andy Robinson in his Rover Coupe, running a 12.41@124mph or my first ever 10’s pass which still stands as my personal best 10.554 @ 136mph.
What are goals for your FTO and how close are you to achieving them?
My goals remain the same, more power and faster ¼ mile times. We are currently building a an EVO engine to go in the FTO, which should see us over 1000bhp and see us well into the 9’s. This should see us challenging the fastest FWD cars in the UK in the various competitions.
When was the last time you pulled an all nighter getting the car ready for a race?
The start of the 2009 season, the car was up and running, with more power than we had had before. We were just back from the dyno where we recorded 620bhp (flywheel) we took the car out for a road test and stripped all the teeth off 3rd gear. We worked late into the night to build a new box ready for racing the next day. Since the last increase in power that took us from 450 to 550lb/ft torque gearboxes have become an issue. Destroying one every race meet, until we designed a new Dog Gear Kit that fits inside the FTO F5M42 gearbox.

Who has helped you the most along the way with the car? Any mentors?
James Silvester, who give up his free weekends to help get the car ready, Nick Rountree the owner of NR Autosport for many a late night spend on the car, and the wife, Libby, for helping out at race days
Is there a particular shop you’d like to recommend?
I would like to thank and recommend my sponsors:
As without them this would not be possible.
We are also looking to pull all the UK’s Fastest FWD cars together in one place, for a massive FWD shooutout. More details can be found on the UK Outlaw Street FWD Shootout Facebook page.
