There was a time when I would bust my ass to ensure there were at least three new posts on this site every week. Ultimately, I’d like us to get back to that point sooner than later.
It’s a question of time, though. This site needs to be updated frequently, with all kinds of interesting automotive content. Sure, we’d like to have more stuff on this site more often because we know that more stuff more often means more people are likely to subscribe, moving us closer to our dream of quitting our day jobs to serve the gearheads of the world full-time, but also because I hate when companies “add” paid features by pulling previously free stuff behind pay walls. That’s so lame.
It’s a lot of work to find the stories we run in the magazine. It’s a lot of work to compile and polish them for publication – here or in the magazine. But these are two different publishing platforms, meaning we can’t build once and publish twice. Basically, where we thought we’d just change to the monthly issue format, the reality is, to get where we want to be, we’ve got to do both. We’ve got to produce excellent content for this space which compliments the excellent content we produce for the monthly issues. It’s all got to be excellent.
MY SECOND JOB
This magazine is pretty much my second job. I, personally, put a good 40+ hours a month into it (much as the site might suggest otherwise of late) on top of the time spent at my full-time day job. GBXM|united doesn’t pay the bills yet, but I’m pleased to announce that thanks to those of you who believe enough in us to subscribe, this little venture is starting to pay for itself. This remodel, for example, is being funded wholly through the sale of subscriptions. Thank you!
BACK TO THE REMODEL
So, back to the remodel. Issue 1.11 builds in less than two weeks, I’ve got a grip of stories to either finish or polish for it, and here we are with a site remodel in process. After the remodel, we’re going to be implementing new point of sale functionality, which will make it super easy to subscribe (and get the latest issue instantly, I hope), as well as make it possible for people who just want a single issue to grab them a la carte.
All this and more is coming to this space as quickly as I can make it happen! And I promise, in addition to investigating ways we can bring down the per-issue cost for printed copies in 2014, we’re going to be experimenting with processes to see to it we get a lot more going on right here on the website.
THANKS FOR BEING PART OF THE DREAM
Gearbox Magazine only matters because YOU matter. Thank you for being part of the dream.
