29 October 2012. Approximately 9:45 AM. I’m wearing blue, paper-based scrubs, a hairnet, and an upside-down particle mask, as I sit in a cold hallway, staring at the door to an operating room. On the other side, my wife is being prepared for surgery to bring out little girl into the world. Barely ten minutes later, I officially join the Car Guy Dad Club. Fatherhood. I’ve got to learn how to run an online magazine all over again, it seems. Scratch that. I’ve got to learn how to do everything all over again.
When this brief post goes live on GBXM Monday, my little Penny will be a whopping one week old. Time is just flying by, which is interesting, considering how much of the past week I’ve spent awake, desperately hoping she’ll just go back to sleep.
RESUMING REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING SOON
I had hoped to have a couple stories ready to go and scheduled before we went to the hospital, but the best laid plans of mice, right? Life is what happens when you’re busy making plans, I guess. I couldn’t be more happy though. Penny is just adorable and I never knew I could unconditionally love something with such purity as this.
FUTURE GEARHEAD = DADDY HAS WORK TO DO
I want my daughter to grow up around cars. More than that, I want her to play cars with Daddy. I want her to get behind the wheel as soon as possible. This means I need to get my shit together. I need to make sure she’s healthy. And I need to make sure I get my race car done before she’s old enough to remember it.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR GEARBOX MAGAZINE
In less than 30 minutes, my whole world changed. It’s time to set things in motion to take GBXM to the next level. I’m going to be simplifying things. Paring down external properties, and getting this machine back to the simple, lean machine it was in the beginning.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
As always, I’m looking for people who believe the stories of good, old fashioned gearhead exceptionalism – stories of regular people doing their best – are the best automotive stories out there and who want to be part of what we’re doing here at GBXM.
On offer is FULL PARTNERSHIP in this venture. Show up, do your best, prove you care, and we share in the future of this publication together. It’s that simple. We’re going to start moving toward a fully subscription-based model, with an eye on eventually going to print, as well as some gearhead events. I can only take this thing so far on my own.
KEEP GOING FAST & PRESS ON REGARDLESS
Gearbox Magazine isn’t going anywhere. I’m devoted to making it the best it can be. If you want to hang out here like a buddy’s garage, that’s awesome, but if you want to pick up some tools and help build something – even take the wheel some day – that’s the ultimate dream. Things here are going to start changing as I have time to implement them, but I’ve got a precious little girl in my life now and I want her to live a high performance life, surrounded by high performance machines and people. It’s time to start leaning out the mixture a bit.
