WAIT. ISN’T IT TUESDAY?
Yes. Yes it is. But I had a pretty eventful weekend and yesterday was the release of GBXM #3. How could I be bummed about that? That said, I was a couple hours late to work yesterday. You see, V & I got together with our friends JP2 and went on a trail run through New River Canyon, north of Phoenix. I don’t even think it was 20 miles, but it took us about 5 hours. My First Trail RunTM.
I knew, the day I bought this truck, I would have to put tires on it pretty quick. Recently, I came across pictures of my truck on a trail run with the previous owner. I hope he had just bought those tires, because the picture was dated 2007! Luckily, I managed to get about a year of almost daily driving out of the old husks before they failed.
A GOOD DAY OUT
John, Jill, Vanessa & I had been trying to put something like this together ever since March of last year, when I quickly sold one of my GVR4s to fund the purchase of Rocinante the Fun Cooker. V’s being pregnant, our having a baby, the holidays, and the oil filter fiasco (read: engine overhaul), really set us back a ways. This trip, simple though it was, showed me just how awesome my little Fun Cooker really is. It might not be much on the highway, but it was like a friggin’ mountain goat Saturday. I finally feel like I have a mechanical buddy again, something I’ve not really felt since Daisy.
[John and I, with our dogs, Bodhi and Mia]
We crawled steep, rutted hills, crossed the river half a dozen times (drove in it at one point, too), and the only mechanical issue was one of my old-ass tires popping five minutes after we hit pavement again on the other side. It was hard to drop US$1000+ for tires on a US$2000 first thing on a Monday morning, but this little adventure has been a long time coming – almost 20 years, when I really think about it – and I’ve never had so much fun thrashing old tires.
