Four years ago, I felt a sense of urgency about getting stories wrapped up and published on time. Those were the early days of Gearbox Magazine, when I had to hustle almost every day to keep this thing humming along.
I still have to hustle to keep things moving, but while I feel a great sense of pride in knowing by this time next week, we will have published 9 monthly issues in a row, it comes with the acknowledgement that I’ve let my once-a-month deadline become an excuse for slacking on the website.
How’s that for honesty, yeah? Given the opportunity to sit on the couch watching Family Guy after my little one (she’ll be 1-year old this month) goes to bed or hop back on a computer to work on the website, I’ve been choosing poorly of late.
Four years ago, I had an idea. I would finally start that DSM magazine I’d seen attempted so many times before. That was it, really. What I didn’t know then was that said idea would evolve into a dream, which would evolve into a sense of purpose – of identity.
GBXM|united is my life’s work. Technically, we turned 4 last month, but since we didn’t run our first interview until October, I always go by that. I didn’t know then what I know now, but what I know now is that the future is brighter than a clueless ricer’s non-projector, Ebay HIDs.
COMING SOON: DREAM BIG
What good is a goal you know you can easily attain, right?
Here’s some of the bigger items on our to-do list in the coming months:
- GBXM 4.0 – We’re going to completely overhaul the site before the end of the year to display more of the good stuff while also making it easier to find the older stuff.
- GBXM STORE – As part of our site re-design, we’re going to launch an official store, where it will be easier to order subscriptions or single issues, as well as maybe pick up a GBXM decal or shirt or such.
- GBXM|united EVENT – Aiming for sometime before August of 2014, I’d like us to organize and host an event. Thinking LeMons meets Shitbox Rally at this point.
Lately, it’s felt like GBXM is a full-time, second job. If any of us are going to make this the full-time job, we’re going to have to hustle. As I look over that simple list above, I almost worry about how it’s going to happen – much like I worry about how the next issue is going to turn out (which I do EVERY month, by the way).
Then again, there was a time when each of us looked at the big lump with all the belts and hoses and wires under the hood and worried about taking it apart, too.
Thanks for four great years. And I think I speak for all of us here at Gearbox Magazine – all four of us today – when I say, the best is yet to come.
