A CONTEST THAT REALLY MATTERS
I’ll admit it. I got caught up in work and family stuff yesterday and didn’t really do anything for the magazine. That’s not to say it isn’t always on my mind. Lately, amidst all my thinking about subscribers (thank you ALL), print-on-demand services, and what all that could mean for GBXM|united in coming years, I had an idea.
A tiny voice in my head says I shouldn’t share this until I’m ready to do it, but A) I don’t think any other automotive outlet gives a shit enough about gearheads to offer something like this and B) it’s important that this sort of thing happens for gearheads, so whatever. This post will give you the broad strokes of what I think is probably the biggest, baddest idea I’ve ever come up with for GBXM|united, and I want to share it with you now. (This is why we’re asking for subscribers and going to charge for issues of the magazine next month.)
TIME & MONEY ARE TIGHT
In the last three years, I’ve decided to spend money which could have been used to complete my race car build on traveling to Europe, where I’ve made a point of meeting gearheads we’ve interviewed here in person. Fortunately, we’ve managed to stay with friends, saving quite a bit of money. Mitsubishi even lent us an ASX4 (Outlander Sport) for the UK leg of our 2012 world tour, which saved us a considerable amount of money – on both car rental fees and fuel costs.
The single largest expense on an international trip is generally going to be the airfare. You can pretty much expect to pay upwards of US$1500 per person just to get there. And this is where things get tricky. My dream is to build GBXM|united into something that makes a difference in gearheads’ lives. Your dream is probably something else.
Faced with a choice of building an engine for your dead race car or buying two tickets to another continent to party with gearheads you’ve never met before – since most of us have to choose one or the other – you’re probably going to pick the engine, right? It makes sense.
THE BIG IDEA
Once we get enough paid subscribers to the magazine, we’re going to host a kickass contest. I might just call it the Great Big BOTH Contest. Here’s what I’d ask of people wanting to enter:
- Tell us about a major automotive dream you’ve started, but not finished, and why you haven’t finished it.
- Finish it. Sell your Xbox, pick up some overtime, bribe friends with beer. Just. Finish. It.
- Document the accomplishment – written or video
- Minimum 1500 words & 15 full-res pictures OR 30 minute, non-shaky, HD video
- What challenges did you face getting started?
- How did you finally make it happen?
- How do you feel now?
- Where do you want to go, with whom, & why?
That last bit is the best part. We’d compile all the stories, put them into a special – free to the public – issue of the magazine, and have everyone vote. Winner would get something like US$3,000 for round trip airfare anywhere in the world to go meet other gearheads and experience the fucking brilliance of the worldwide gearhead community for themselves. How’s that sound? Maybe we could do a grand prize that covered airfare and hotel, plus a first prize that was just airfare. I don’t know yet. Just depends on how successful this dream becomes in the next three years.
None of us here at GBXM|united is looking to get rich at this. In fact, we’ve been losing money on this venture since we launched in 2009. We want to get to the point where we can spend our days helping gearheads all over the world build high performance machines and lives. But we’re going to start moving that direction by making a little money we can reinvest back into GBXM|united to become even more helpful and entertaining for you, the gearheads of the world. Have you subscribed yet? Remember, it’s free through the end of the month!
