I’ve been here for years. And that’s as far as I’ll take the LL Cool J reference today. Slowly getting back into the habit of writing here on the site – in addition to in the magazine – I honestly don’t have a plan for this one. Suffice to say, Build Day is back.
Looking through several pages of stock photography for an image I could use which implied a sense of build day being back again upon us that simultaneously sparked an idea strong enough to propagate across the screen into a fully formed blog post, I found pictures of railroads, steam engines, propellers, turbines and rockets. Then, all the way back on Page 38, I came across the picture above.
Saab is back.
Recent news that National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) has dusted off the old 9-3 assembly line in Trollhattan and started making Saabs again seemed a perfect parallel to the return of build day – and my publishing more content here on the website. Like Saab, GBXM isn’t the biggest, fastest, most desirable product in the segment.
I’d say we’re not the best, either. We’re the plucky underdog that makes sense to a relatively small group of people in the world. Familiarity breeds contempt, right? We’d love 1,000,000 subscribers, but we’re focused on 10,000 right now. We don’t want to be all things to all people. We want to be more like everything to a special group of gearheads who get it.
The more I think about it, the more it seems that’s the secret. Doesn’t matter if you immediately know what you’re doing. There’s a need to do something that gets us moving and opens us up to possibilities. We’re going page to page, finding little bits and pieces of inspiration as we go, looking at rockets and airplanes until finally, on Page 38, we find that random Saab 4-banger that makes everything click.
And when that moment strikes, you have to do something with it and get it out into the world. Doesn’t matter if it’s not perfect. Doesn’t matter if it’s got ypos and whatnot. (wink) What matters is that you make the effort.
This weekend, we make the effort. Issue 1.11 starts building tomorrow.
