We might all agree that automotive projects never really end. So how do we know we’ve actually made any progress? We use terms like “butt dyno” to suggest we can feel things have improved, but the only way to really know is to strap the thing to the dyno and spin the rollers.
Fortunately, there are two free mods anyone can use on any vehicle to see immediate improvement.
When we think of mods, we tend to think of things like intakes, headers, exhaust, carbs, injectors, and so on, but when you really think about it, the actual hardware is more the tools used to realize the plans we devise for our machines.
MOD 1: STRATEGY
Chance favors the prepared mind. The first mod is SMART goals. These are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely goals which make it easy to spot and measure progress. They act as the road map for our builds. It’s been said “The whole world gets out of the way for the man who knows where he’s going.”
Would you rather work on a project where everything goes to plan or everything always falls apart? Wouldn’t you like to see that light at the end of the tunnel getting brighter and know it’s not a train?
MOD 2: TACTICS
Practice makes perfect. Driver skill, muscle memory, physical skill. There’s a lot of people out there spending a lot of money to build machines they’ll never be able to master simply because it’s easier to install mods than practice. Or is it?
What’s the weakest link in your machine? Is it you?
MOD 3: TOOLS
These are the mechanical bits; the aftermarket performance parts we all lust over during our digital window shopping. Goals (strategy) dictate tactics, which dictates the tools. If you were honest with your goal-making up front (for example, maybe not building a 600hp, 9-second race car that you have to drive to school and work 60 times for every trip to the track), SMART goals will make it easier to find the parts you need without overpaying for those you don’t.
Mods 1 & 2 are unique in that they are ongoing. Once you start including Mods 1 & 2 into your project processes, you’ll begin to see Mod 3 in a whole new light. You will realize greater performance at reduced costs and gain an overall sense of accomplishment fly-by-the-seat-of-the-pants gearheads seldom experience.
